Expansion of Bangkok's airport to begin next year

Expansion of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport will begin early next year at a projected cost of 48 billion to 50 billion baht (1.4 billion to 1.5 billion dollars), state media reports said Saturday. Suvarnabhumi Airport Director Serirat Prasutanond said that negotations had begun with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to prepare the master plan for phase two of the new airport, which opened on September 28, 2016.

The expansion will include building a midfield concourse that will be separated from the main passenger terminal, an electric train tunnel linking the midfield concourse and the passenger terminal, and a 3.7-kilometre third runway on the western side of the airport, he told the Thai News Agency (TNA).

"It is expected that the ICAO could conclude its study early next year and construction could start immediately," said Serirat.

Construction for the second phase programme is expected to take one to two years. Upon completion, the airport will be able to serve 55 million passengers annually, compared with the current capacity of 45 million.

The 3.8-billion-dollar brand-new Suvarnabhumi Airport ran into numerous problems shortly after opening, including the discovery of cracks on the taxiways, forcing authorities to reopen Don Muang, the capital's old airport, to handle most domestic flights.

If the government decides to increase traffic at Don Muang, Suvarnabhumi's expansion plans could be delayed, Serirat noted.

"The issue is being studied by ICAO, and result of the study should be made public in late October," he said.

The number of passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport is projected to increase to around 45 million next year, up from 38.7 million in the last 11 months.
