DUBAI-based Etihad Airways is to introduce Rockwell Collins' Airshow moving-map and passenger information service across its fleet, delivering it via the existing Thales Avionics TopSeries i4000 in-seat audio/video-on-demand hardware.
The service will be launched next month in the carrier's Airbus A330s and A340s and Boeing 777-300ERs and 767-300ERs. Initially it will offer highly detailed flightpath views plus destination and flight information in English and Arabic. An upgrade scheduled for next year will offer live news feeds delivered via the onboard VHF datalink, airport arrival and connecting-gate information, terminal maps and destination city guides. EVA Air of Taiwan says that the premium cabins in its sixth Boeing 777-300ER are being fitted with mood lighting designed to alleviate jetlag. The aircraft will be deployed on the carrier's Taipei-Los Angeles route. The LED-based lighting system will be used to evoke six different times of the day-sunrise, midday, sunset, evening, relaxation and night-time - to help passengers' body clocks adjust to the timezone variations experienced during trans-Pacific travel. It will also project images of the constellations Orion, Ursa Major, Pegasus, Cygnus, Auriga and Centaurus on to the cabin ceiling.
