Singapore and UK in airline deal

Wednesday 04/10/2017 - Source: Airline Weekly

Singapore and Britain have agreed an aviation deal, giving national carriers free access to one another's markets. The open skies agreement means that Singapore Airlines will be able to pick up passengers from UK airports and fly them elsewhere - including the US.

UK carriers will have similar privileges in Singapore.

Singapore said that the deal was "more liberal" than other agreements and it allowed airlines from both nations to operate like domestic carriers.

It is the first such deal for Britain, though Singapore has a similar pact with the United Arab Emirates.

"This is indeed a trail-blazing agreement concluded between two forward-looking countries that share a common objective of promoting free competition," said Singapore's transport minister Raymond Lim.

The changes will come into force in March 2018.

Earlier this year, European Union transport ministers unanimously backed an open skies aviation deal with the US aimed at liberalising transatlantic air travel.
