South Korean aviation company Korea Aerospace Industries said Thursday it has won a 700 million dollar contract to supply wing parts for the Airbus consortium's next-generation of wide-body planes. The contract calls for the manufacture and delivery of main wing structures for 800 A350 XWB jets over 10 years from 2010, the Korean company said.

"Initial design work for the wing structures is to be completed by early August 2009 with production to begin in June 2010," a spokesperson told AFP.

The aircraft, being developed for production in 2013, will be the first Airbus model to make extensive use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic for its wings and fuselage.

KAI, based in the south coast city of Sacheon, is South Korea's main aerospace company and manufactures both the KT-1 basic trainer and T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic jets.

The firm also makes wing parts and fuselages for both civilian and military aircraft including Boeing 747 jumbo jets and F-15 fighters.
