Geothermal system to be used at airport

Friday 26/10/2018 - Source: Aviation - News

The Juneau Airport secured funding earlier this month to use geothermal energy instead of heating oil for planned new airport facilities.

Airport Manager Dave Palmer said the project will cost $1 million more for the so-called ground-source heat pump than to install a conventional oil-fired boiler system, but that it would pay itself off whenever heating fuel is more than $3 a gallon.

The Legislature's Budget and Audit Committee approved a grant to the airport for $513,000, half of the extra money for the system. The city will match the rest, Palmer said.

Consultants recently drilled test holes. The project is scheduled to be opened for bid Dec. 18, and work may begin by March next year, he said. Tests and construction are being coordinated with planning for the new Mendenhall Valley pool, which will use a similar system.

The geothermal system doesn't require steamy-hot water. Engineers will drill perhaps 200 to 300 feet down - the deeper the better - and put about 3,800 feet of pipe in the ground. Liquid extracted will come up about 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

That's not hot enough to heat a building comfortably, so it will be supplemented with electric heat pumps.

But it is hot enough to melt ice. Palmer is planning to run the heavy plastic heat-exchange pipe underneath the airport's new sidewalks, so they don't have to be shoveled.
