Dubai-bound passengers stranded on runway

Friday 09/06/2017 - Source: Gulf News

Air India blamed bad weather and forced passengers bound for Dubai to sit on the Mumbai airport runway for more than three hours before cancelling the flight, angry passengers said yesterday.

The airline finally told us to go home and come back early morning for the next flight, passengers said, many of whom had to fight with the authorities to stay in the airport.

The passenger were supposed to arrive at Dubai airport at 5pm local time on Wednesday, but they finally arrived at 2.30pm on Thursday. "Some of us had come from Kerala and there was no place for us to go," said Rejo Johny, a passenger. "We had come to Mumbai by train to catch this flight," he said. Poonam, another passenger, also had a bad time flying out from Dubai on the airline. Her flight which was supposed to leave at 1pm, finally took off at 7.30 pm. "It was terrible," she said. The expatriate who lives in Dubai said on her return journey here, airline staff said the flight was delayed because of the cyclone (Gonu). "We were given a choice to either take the afternoon flight or the next day," she said.

To add to the passengers woes, their luggage was lost and they finally managed to get their baggage yesterday. There apparently was a mix up and the luggage had gone to the wrong terminal, passengers said.

Bani, another passenger on AI 771 from Mumbai, said the wait on the runway was excruciating. "It was hot," she said. Even after they deplaned, airline staff only kept saying, "We will get back to you in 15 minutes," she said. The expatriate who had gone home for her holidays said they suffered a lot of inconvenience.

Other passengers said there were many families with children and the suspense and the suffering was unacceptable.

A few weeks ago another AI flight from Goa via Mumbai was delayed for more than 24 hours.
