Reps Panel Plans Retreat on Aviation

Sunday 24/09/2017 - Source: The Guardian

Determined to consolidate the gains in the aviation sector and bring it to international standards, the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation will next week hold a retreat for its members and heads of all aviation agencies, companies and service providers in the industry.

Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Independence Ogunewe, who spoke at the weekend in Abuja after the inauguration of the committee, said the retreat would enable the stakeholders strive to ensure that the nation attained Category One certification.

Category One certification was stipulated by the United States (U.S.) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a condition for the three designated Nigerian carriers - Bellview, Virgin Nigeria, and Arik Airlines - to operate unhindered directly into U.S.

Category One certification is U.S. highest safety standard for any carrier operating to that country but it has eluded Nigeria since the demise of Nigeria Airways and as a result of other safety-related issues in the nation's aviation sector.

Ogunewe said he was optimistic that with the zeal exhibited by the Minister of Transportation, Dieziani Alison-Madueke, the sector would do well in terms of safety and service delivery.

He promised to ensure that the committee collaborated with all stakeholders in the sector, adding that it was only through cooperation that the necessary legislations as well as budgeting and budget implementation within the sector would be carried out.

He explained that the outcome of the retreat would assist in no small measure to achieve the dream of all stakeholders in the aviation sector.

He, however, called for support from the National Assembly, the Transport Ministry, aviation agencies and all stakeholders to enable Assembly pass the remaining bills that would stabilise the activities of the NCAA.
