Aviation boom in Mideast spurs demand for jet fuel

Monday 29/05/2017 - Source: Gulf News

Demand for jet fuel is growing by six per cent per year in the Gulf region, almost double the global average, according to energy firm BP.

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, bases of three fast-growing airlines Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways, are fuelling this growth.

"The estimated GCC demand for aviation jet fuel currently is about 3.9 billion US gallons [11.6 million tonnes]. The growth rates for the GCC will be about six per cent per annum over next few years," Giri Iyengar, regional marketing manager of Air BP, told Gulf News.

Globally jet fuel consumption is growing about three per cent annually, he said. Emirates and Qatar Airways are expanding their fleets on average by one plane each month. They are taking delivery of dozens of planes in the coming years. Demand for aviation fuel is expected to pick up after 2010 when significant work on the ongoing airport is completed, Iyengar said.

Jet fuel consumption could grow 10 per cent in the UAE alone, Iyengar added.

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha are developing themselves as aviation hubs and trying to serve passengers flying between Asia on one side and Europe and North America on the other.

Dubai is expanding its existing international airport with an investment of $4.1 billion to increase passenger handling capacity from the current 30 million to 70 million per year before 2020.

A new $8.2-billion international airport in Jebel Ali will have a capacity to handle 120 million passengers when fully completed. In the first phase, which opens in 2009, it will have a capacity to handle seven million passengers.

The $6.8-billion phased redevelopment of Abu Dhabi International Airport will take its capacity to more than 40 million passengers per year from the current seven million.

Qatar's $5.5-billion New Doha International Airport will open in 2009 with an annual passenger capacity of 24 million, which will grow to 50 million by 2015.
