Thai Airways to offer discounts

Monday 07/08/2017 - Source: Gulf Daily News

Thai Airways has agreed to provide concessional air tickets to its nationals who will be flying home as part of Bahrain's general amnesty for expatriate workers.

The airline does not fly directly to Bangkok from Manama and instead has an alliance with Gulf Air, which takes passengers as far as Dubai.

A one-way ticket for the entire trip costs around BD175 and it is understood that Thai Airways may offer discounts of up to 50 per cent.

Thai Embassy officials initially approached the airline for assistance in helping reduce airfare for people, who maybe unable to pay.

Ambassador Phithak Phrombubpha made a request for support in an official letter.

"We have already approached Thai Airways to co-operate with us about the price and they have been happy to do so," said an embassy spokesman.

"Generally, the airline and Thai embassies around the world have friendly rates, and in this case we are asking them to extend that to all Thai people (taking part in the amnesty).

"The problem we have at the moment is with seats being full, but we expect that to be clear by the middle of the month.

"This is the peak season for travel to and from Thailand (which runs from May to early September)."

Meanwhile, ambassador Phrombubpha will host a meeting with community leaders in Bahrain to discuss the government's general amnesty for expatriate workers.

More than 20 people are expected to attend Friday's event, including Thai community leaders who have lived and worked in the country for more than 20 years, to help promote the amnesty scheme's benefits.

Embassy deputy head of mission Aajin Ditta-In, counsellor Anchalee Saifah, first secretary Shakir Sevikul and second secretary Somchai Suksawatamnuay will also be present.

An embassy spokesman said the meeting had been organised in an attempt to ensure that Thais made full use of the opportunity, to either legalise their stay or leave the country without penalty.

"The meeting will be with Thai community leaders and they will be able to spread the word for us and help us make this a success," said the spokesman.

"We want to get the word out on the streets and hear their suggestions about how we can further promote this."

Embassy officials are planning a campaign to raise awareness of the amnesty within the Thai community.

Around 500 leaflets and 500 booklets will be handed out, in a drive that started yesterday, at popular hotspots, such as restaurants and hotels, giving information about the scheme and who to contact for help.

The Embassy has also set up an emergency telephone number for those who want information about the amnesty, on 39187592.
