Boeing sees big demand in Russia, CIS

Oman Air plans to lease four wide-bodied aircraft to start operating long-haul routes, a spokesman at the national carrier said on Wednesday.

"Oman Air plans to have 19 planes on its fleet by end 2011," said the spokesman of the airline whose fleet currently comprises 11 aircraft. "We are getting one Airbus A-330, two Airbus A-310s and one Boeing 737-800," he told Reuters.

The Boeing 737 would join the fleet by end-September, while the Airbus aircraft are expected to come on November 15, he said.

Oman Air will launch flights to London and Bangkok from November 15 and plans to fly to five more destinations -- Damascus, Riyadh, Jeddah, Karachi and Lahore, he said.

The board of Oman Aviation Services (OAS), which operates Oman Air, approved in June a plan to acquire a Boeing 737-800 and an A330-200 from Airbus.

Oman Air is preparing for an overhaul after Oman's government offered to buy a majority stake in Oman Aviation Services to turn the airline operator into a state-owned firm.

The government has raised its stake in the airline to 82 percent from 34 percent by injecting an additional $147 million.
