World's biggest airliner is grounded by light drizzle in Hong Kong

Hundreds of plane spotters in Hong Kong were disappointed Tuesday when the world's biggest airliner was grounded by a light drizzle. The Airbus A380 super-jumbo was due to do a second low flight over Hong Kong's landmark Victoria Harbour early Tuesday morning on the new plane's four-day visit to an international air show.

However, the flyover was cancelled because of grey skies and a light drizzle, although all other flights in and out of the city continued as normal.

The decision to ground the mighty 555-seater jet was taken because of the effect of the low visibility on spectators rather than for safety reasons, air show officials explained.

The flight over Hong Kong, a repeat of one done in clear blue skies on Monday, was the last chance for Hong Kongers to see the Airbus A380 fly at a little over 1 kilometre over the city centre.

The 72.8 metre super-jumbo arrived Sunday in Hong Kong to promote the four-day Asian Aerospace Show as part of an eight-day, five-city Asian tour that takes in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea.

On Saturday, the plane scraped its wing tip against a maintenance hangar before taking off from Bangkok to Chiang Mai en route to Hanoi but did not suffer any serious damage. It leaves Hong Kong Wednesday.

Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Qantas have already placed orders for the A380. The first plane is due to be delivered in October, more than a year behind schedule.
