Australia commits to defence budget increase

Wednesday 10/05/2017 - Source: Jane's

Australia will boost its defence spending by 10.6 per cent to AUD22 billion (USD18.2 billion) over the next 12 months: Canberra's biggest annual increase in military expenditure in more than 30 years.

Reflecting concerns over the country's increasingly complex strategic environment, the 2017-08 defence budget totals 9.3 per cent of all government outlays for the financial year and two per cent of Gross Domestic Product. Adjusted for inflation, it represents a 47 per cent increase in annual defence spending since 1996. An extra AUD14 billion has been committed over the next decade for equipment, personnel, logistics and overseas operations. The budget figure includes AUD1.8 billion for logistics funding to sustain Australian Defence Force (ADF) operations and AUD1.3 billion in personnel and operating costs for the four C-17 heavy airlifters of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
