Cyprus airliner struck by lightning

Thursday 11/05/2017 - Source: Gulf Times

A Cyprus Airways plane carrying 118 passengers and seven crew on a flight to Athens was forced to return to Larnaca airport yesterday after it was struck by lightning, state radio reported.
The pilot decided to return to base as a safety precaution after one of the engines was hit while the plane was flying over the west coast city of Paphos.
Airport authorities were put on alert after the pilot requested permission to return and the plane landed safely at Larnaca 45 minutes after taking off, the radio said.
Nobody was hurt during the incident and arrangements were being made to put passengers on another flight to Athens.
"The captain behaved properly in requesting to land his plane at Larnaca airport as this is standard practice and I applaud his move," civil aviation official Leonidas Leonidou told the Cyprus News Agency.
